Do you remember how it was before we managed to get the lower tier of the large garage block closed?
The Committee hold regular meetings with council officers to discuss problems on the estate and to identify improvements / repairs and the maintainance of soft and hard landscaping.
In 2001, with the help of Bill Rammell, a working party was set up to look at ways of regenerating the estate. A lottery grant was applied for and won. We then commissioned A D Architects to look at the estate and come up with a regeneration plan. The plan was produced and included:
1. Demolition of the garage blocks
2. Building single story garages on the estate
3. The introduction of a one way traffic flow.
All these items are still on the agenda, but Item 1 & 2 will require expenditure in excess of 2 Million Pounds and that sort of money is proving hard to source. We are however hoping that funding will be found before the garages fall down of their own accord.
If you remember how the estate was a few short years ago, then you will agree that there have been many improvements. These improvements have only come about as a result of a lot of hard work by your committee and with the help of council officers.
The association was formed in 1999 by a group of residents who were very concerned about
the run down appearance of the estate, the high incidence of criminal damage and of crime in general. The estate had a history of neglect and lack of investment which made itself apparent in a number of ways. The shrub beds were populated by dead or dying plants. Many of the trees on the estate were dead and weeds were flourishing. Rubbish and graffiti were very much in evidence and the burning of cars in the lower garage area was a regular occurrence. Used syringes were frequently seen in the garage area and many of the garage doors were ripped from their hinges.
It was quite obvious that things were going to get even worse unless something was done to change the trend, and so the Residents Association came into being
